Automotive key programming

Cutting a Car Key and Programming It Are Two Different Things

On many modern vehicles, cutting the key is only one part of making a working replacement.

The physical key blade operates the mechanical portion of the lock or ignition when applicable. But many vehicles also use an electronic security system that needs to recognize the key before the engine will start.

That's where programming comes in.

Depending on the vehicle, the key may contain a transponder chip, remote, proximity system or other electronic components that need to be registered or programmed to the vehicle.

ATL Local Locksmith provides mobile car key programming for many makes and models.

If you also need the physical key or fob replaced, we provide complete car key replacement service as well.

This service is part of our broader automotive locksmith in Atlanta offerings.

Transponder Key Programming

Transponder keys contain a small electronic chip that communicates with the vehicle's immobilizer system.

When you attempt to start the vehicle, the car checks for an authorized transponder. If the key isn't recognized, the vehicle may crank without starting, display a security warning, or prevent starting altogether depending on the system.

That means having a key blade that physically turns the ignition doesn't necessarily mean you have a working key.

For supported vehicles, we can program compatible transponder keys so they're recognized by the vehicle's security system.

A key fob can control several functions depending on the vehicle, including:

  • Lock
  • Unlock
  • Trunk release
  • Panic function
  • Remote start

Some vehicles use a remote that's separate from the transponder key. Others combine the remote, transponder and key blade into one unit.

Newer vehicles may use a proximity fob as the primary vehicle key.

Because these systems work differently, programming requirements depend on the exact year, make, model and type of key or fob.

ATL Local Locksmith programs compatible key fobs and remotes for many supported vehicles.

Vehicles equipped with push-button ignition typically use an electronic proximity key. Instead of inserting a traditional key into the ignition, the vehicle detects an authorized key nearby or inside the vehicle.

When a replacement proximity key is added, it generally needs to be programmed to the vehicle before the push-button-start system will recognize it.

We provide push start key replacement and programming for many makes and models.

If you've lost every proximity key to the vehicle, tell us that when you call. An all-keys-lost situation can require a different procedure than adding another key while a working key is still available.

The key situation matters

Do You Still Have a Working Key?

One of the first things we'll ask is whether you still have a working key. That's important because automotive programming procedures can be different depending on whether we're:

Adding a Spare Key

You already have a working key and want another one programmed.

Programming a Key After All Keys Are Lost

There are no working keys left for the vehicle. An all-keys-lost situation may require additional steps depending on the vehicle's immobilizer and security system.

When requesting a quote, tell us which situation you're dealing with so we can determine what's required for your vehicle.

Foreign car key programming

BMW, Mercedes-Benz & European Car Key Programming

Foreign and luxury vehicles can use more specialized key and immobilizer systems than many standard vehicle platforms.

ATL Local Locksmith specializes in automotive key work and has experience with many European and luxury vehicle key systems.

BMW Key Programming

BMW has used multiple generations of electronic key and immobilizer systems. The procedure for adding or replacing a BMW key depends heavily on the vehicle's year and platform. We work with many BMW key systems and can determine the available options based on the specific vehicle.

Mercedes-Benz Key Programming

Mercedes-Benz vehicles use specialized electronic authorization systems that vary across generations and models. We provide key service for many Mercedes-Benz vehicles. Give us the exact year and model so we can identify the system and determine the available options.

Audi & Volkswagen Key Programming

Audi and Volkswagen have used multiple generations of transponder, immobilizer and proximity systems. We provide key programming for many supported Audi and Volkswagen vehicles.

Land Rover & Range Rover Key Programming

We work with key and proximity systems found on many Land Rover and Range Rover vehicles.

Other Foreign Vehicles

We also work with many key systems used by BMW, Mercedes-Benz, Audi, Volkswagen, Volvo, MINI, Land Rover, Range Rover, Porsche, Toyota, Lexus, Honda, Acura, Nissan, Infiniti, Hyundai, Kia and others. Vehicle coverage varies by year, model and key system.

Why Does a Car Key Need Programming?

Most modern vehicles use some form of electronic anti-theft system.

The exact design varies by manufacturer, but the basic idea is that the vehicle needs to recognize an authorized electronic key before it allows normal starting operation.

That's why simply copying the cuts from an existing key may not be enough. A replacement key may need to be electronically registered with the vehicle before it becomes a fully functional key.

This is also why programming procedures can vary significantly between manufacturers—and even between different models and years from the same manufacturer.

We come to your vehicle

Mobile Car Key Programming in Atlanta

You don't necessarily need to bring the vehicle to a shop just because a key needs programming.

ATL Local Locksmith provides mobile automotive key programming throughout Atlanta. For supported vehicles, we bring the programming equipment to the vehicle and complete the work at your location. That could be:

  • Your driveway
  • Your workplace
  • A parking lot
  • A repair shop
  • A dealership
  • Another location within our service area

If you have a replacement key or fob already, tell us exactly what you have when requesting service.

How Car Key Programming Works

Step 1

Tell Us What You Drive

Give us the vehicle's year, make and model.

Step 2

Tell Us About the Key

Let us know whether you have a working key, all keys are lost, you already purchased a replacement key, you need us to provide the replacement key, the remote works but the vehicle won't start, or the vehicle starts but the remote buttons don't work. These details help identify what type of service may actually be needed.

Step 3

We Identify the System

We'll determine the type of key and programming system used by the vehicle and whether we support that particular application.

Step 4

We Program the Key

For supported vehicles, we'll perform the applicable programming procedure using professional automotive programming equipment.

Step 5

We Test It

We'll test the applicable key functions before the job is complete.

Already Bought a Key or Key Fob?

If you already purchased a replacement key or fob, let us know before scheduling the job. Not every key that looks correct is actually compatible with every vehicle.

Keys and fobs can differ by:

  • Part number
  • Frequency
  • Transponder type
  • Electronics
  • Vehicle platform
  • Region
  • Manufacturer
  • Model year

Before attempting to program a customer-supplied key, we'll need to determine whether it's compatible with the vehicle.

If you're unsure which key to purchase, contacting us before buying one can help avoid ending up with a key that can't be used with your vehicle.

Does Your Key Actually Need Programming?

Not every key problem is a programming problem. For example:

Key Turns but Vehicle Won't Start

This can sometimes indicate that the mechanical key is correct but the vehicle isn't recognizing the transponder. There can also be other causes, so the key and vehicle need to be evaluated.

Remote Buttons Don't Work

If the vehicle starts normally but the lock/unlock buttons don't work, the problem may involve the remote portion of the key rather than the immobilizer.

Push Start Says “Key Not Detected”

This can have several causes, including the key fob itself, its battery or the vehicle's key-detection system.

Replacement Key Won't Program

A replacement key may be incompatible with the vehicle even if it physically looks identical to the original.

We'll look at the actual symptoms and vehicle information rather than assuming every key issue requires the same programming procedure.
